Nananu, The Island Magazine

The client is developing two multi-million-dollar real estate projects, The Talei and The Chedi Nananu, on the relatively unknown and well-preserved private island of Nananu-I-Ra in the Fiji Islands. The site should inform viewers on all the Island has to offer for a new luxury holiday experience, right down to the concierge service on arrival.

The objective is to design an online travel magazine with beautiful imagery, impressively sophisticated design and simple navigation catering for high net worth visitors.

Although following a grid layout, the design contains curvy design elements to offset the rigidity of a grid pattern. Together with the choice of turquoise blue colour, they create a sense of an environment surrounded by ocean and beach.

A dominating masthead in Flash contains beautiful imagery to create a sense of reading a glossy, expensive travel magazine. Instead of the usual percentage loaded animation, an ocean wave graphic gently lulls in the background during the loading process to enhance the impression of a sea side paradise.

Text legibility is always a challenge to web designers. Copy is given enough white space to allow it to breathe and make it easier to read. A call-out is placed immediately below page titles and summarizes page content.

Due to budget considerations, the site is built on simple HTML pages. However, to easily update the content and hence the navigation, all button names and URLs are stored in an XML file. The Flash menu bar dynamically creates navigation buttons. A page or section can be taken out in seconds.
